Foundation Year Courses in the UK: A Guide for 2026

April 2026

Foundation Year courses in the UK—also known as Year 0 for UK students and Integrated Foundation Years, or International Foundation Programmes (IFP/IFY) for International students, are designed to prepare students for undergraduate study. They are especially useful if you don’t meet direct undergraduate entry requirements or come from a different education system.

What is a Foundation Year?

A Foundation Year is typically a one-year preparatory course that helps students develop subject knowledge, academic skills, and English proficiency (for international students) before progressing to a degree.

  • UK students: Usually take integrated foundation years attached to a degree (e.g. “BSc Psychology with Foundation Year”).
  • International students: Often take standalone International Foundation Programmes (IFP/IFY) alongside pre-sessional English courses and qualifications (such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE) before progressing to a degree.

These programmes act as a bridge to undergraduate study, particularly for students with international qualifications, non-standard qualifications or lower grades.
